About Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialty in dentistry that involves the diagnosis, prevention and correction of improper positioning of teeth, such as malocclusions, misaligned teeth, troublesome bites, crowding, and jaw misalignment. Orthodontics can also be used for cosmetic purposes if the person wishes to have a better smile.

Orthodontics is important because misaligned teeth or improper positioning can lead to a higher risk of tooth decay and gingivitis. An improper bite can make teeth harder to reach or more painful to floss, leading to poor oral hygiene in those particular regions.

What makes Dr. Neil Capolongo, DDS so special?

Dr. Neil Capolongo provides a personalized care plan for all of his patients. His treatment plans are designed to focus on correcting the issues while taking into consideration the specific needs of each patient and their age and maturity level.

All orthodontic cases are considered very carefully — Dr. Capolongo will not recommend orthodontic treatment based on your child’s chronological age, but rather, he recommends braces only when your child’s mouth is ready for correction.

Starting orthodontics too soon just keeps your child in braces longer, which is undesirable all around. To that end, we perform a full orthodontic assessment before orthodontic treatment begins, including a review of the health of all surrounding teeth and gums.

First visit-consultation

At Kids are Great Dental, we want your child’s first experience meeting our orthodontic staff to be a positive one. We take every possible step to create a welcoming environment and to make your child feel comfortable and confident.

When you arrive for your first visit, an orthodontic dental assistant will escort you and your child to our private consultation room. We ask that you fill out our Dentistry Health History and Orthodontic forms prior to your arrival (available on our website).

Dr. Capolongo will review the forms with you, examine your child, and discuss any oral issues and potential treatment options. Dr. Capolongo will also address any of your child’s questions, concerns, fears and/or anxieties.

Next Steps

After the initial consultation, your child’s next appointment includes having their teeth photographed, performing a panoramic radiograph and using our state-of-the-art technique for obtaining teeth impressions, which is much easier and less messy than traditional methods. Once finished, a date is set to begin treatment.

Types of treatment

There are a variety of treatment modalities and methods to correct a bite. Orthodontic treatment can vary in length of time depending on the severity of the bite and the developmental stage of your child’s teeth.

Most orthodontic cases can be treated with traditional fixed-wire braces or Invisalign. The length of treatment depends on the severity of the malocclusion and the current developmental stage of the teeth.

We offer traditional metal brackets or clear ceramic brackets (as a cosmetic option for patients who prefer a less noticeable bracket). Should your child choose traditional braces, they get to choose the color of elastics used at each visit, which can add a bit of fun to the process.

For some patients, the appearance or discomfort of metal or ceramic brackets and/or difficulties in keeping teeth healthy during treatment may deter them from this option. At Kids Are Great Dental, we offer several cosmetic options, including Invisalign — which allows patients to achieve straight teeth while staying comfortable and keeping the treatment discreet.
